On this page we honor those among us who have loved
and dedicated themselves to the Pug Breed.

Although we no longer have them with us, we know they
live on in the many lives they and their work with Pugs
has touched.

Words  are all we have to express the facts about their
lives, but words to not give enough voice to the measure
of their time among us, or their contributions to the
breed.

We are not here long, but the list of lives touched by our
work is the true measure of how we are remembered.
Mary "Jean" Wenig, Sure Sweet Pugs
Mary "Jean" Wenig went home to be with her Maker on October 28th,
2007.  Jean was born on November 28, 1924, in Salem, Oregon. She
served in the Women's Air Corps (WAC) from December 8, 1944 to
October 18, 1946. She graduated from Willamette University on June
12, 1948. On September 11, 1948, Jean married Royal (Roy) A. Wenig.

Known to her family, friends, and Roy as Jean, the young newlyweds
made their home in Salem. In June of 1960, they moved to Emmett
Idaho. Jean was a member of the American Legion and the American
Legion Auxiliary. She worked tirelessly for both organizations for 49
years. She was also the first woman commander of the American Legion
Post 49 in Emmett.

Jean and Roy worked hard together to create Sure Sweet Pugs. Jean
was an avid breeder of Pugs and a dog show exhibitor. She bred many
champions over the  years and their most recent, completed his
championship the day she passed away. Jean was a mentor to many new
Pug enthusiasts. She was a member of and volunteer for the dog clubs
to which she belonged, and a founding member of the Puget Sound Pug
Dog Club. She had a passion for rescue, and was a foster home to many
a wayward Pug over the years. She and Roy were also co-founders of
the only all-breed shelter in Emmett.

The day Jean finished her last owner handled Pug, she also finished his
sister, then went on to win Best Brace in Show. Never one to pass up an
opportunity to help others, her first day home from her initial hospital
stay, she was up making cookies for the veterans, even though she had
to use a walker.

No matter what, Jean always put her Pugs' best interests above her
own. When she knew she was sick, she make the difficult decision to
give up most of her remaining Pugs. One of whom died just two days
after visiting her in the hospital. His ashes and those of seven other of
her beloved Pugs were laid to rest with her. Sure Sweet Pugs continue
on, in the pedigrees and homes of those of us that knew and loved Jean.

A perpetual trophy for Best Bred By Exhibitor In Specialty Show and
24 plaques to be awarded in her memory over the next 12 years will be
a fitting tribute to a true Pug Lover, who loved to show her Pugs in the
Bred By class.

June 1962 and married Leonard B. Alenick on June 27, 1962.

Both Gail and her husband resided at Fort Lewis from 1967-68 while
Leonard served in the Army at Madigan Hospital.  In 1972, they chose
Lakewood as the location to live and set up Leonard’s medical practice
and have been here since.

Gail’s talents, contributions and abilities were numerous.  Much of her
energies were dedicated to gifted child education while her children
were school-aged.  She was also quite devoted to teaching and writing
articles about one of her greatest joys, dog obedience training, from
1972 until 2002, when her disability physically prevented her from
continuing.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Leonard B Alenick, MD;
her two children, Deanne Alenick Renshaw & David Alenick; and four
grandchildren, Evan & Elena Renshaw and Dylan & Kalissa Alenick.
